Civics

Why Civics?  Why does an organization with a cross in their logo have a focus on civics?  Doesn't the 'Separation of Church and State' mean that Christians should stay out of politics?  What exactly is civics anyway? Civics is simply that which deals with the rights and duties of citizens.

Christians, as well as members of every faith in America, should be actively engaged in their government.  In Romans 13:1, the Apostle Paul tells us to "be subject to the governing authorities.  For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God."  At that time the people of God were subject to the Roman Emperor Nero who persecuted the church, but they were called to obey and respect his authority nonetheless.

In America today we have quite a different system.  To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, we are a "government of the people, by the people and for the people."  We no longer are subjects of an emperor or a monarch, WE are the sovereign!  We are ruled by the collective will of those who participate in this representative government.  It's our responsibility because we're the ones in charge!

We believe Christians have an even greater responsibility in the administration of our government.  Our government officials are responsible for setting the rules, in the form of laws and regulations, that we all have to live under.  They determine if we get to enjoy our freedoms or if freedoms are infringed.  They can either be good managers of our tax dollars or they can be wasteful or corrupt.  They can either create an environment where our children can prosper or allow institutional decline.  A very impactful way that Christians can show love to our neighbors is to run for office or support, and hold accountable, those that do.
